At Ms. Kitty’s Animal Sanctuary, we’ve made it our mission to provide love, comfort, and high-quality care for senior cats in need. As cats age, their needs change—just like ours do. One of the most important ways we can care for them is by understanding the health issues they’re most likely to face in their golden years.
Here’s a guide to some of the most common health challenges in senior cats and how we can support them through it.
🩺 1. Kidney Disease
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is one of the most common conditions affecting older cats. Symptoms may include increased thirst, frequent urination, weight loss, and a decreased appetite.
How we help: We monitor water intake, offer special renal-support diets, and ensure cats with CKD receive regular vet visits and lab work.
🦷 2. Dental Disease
Dental issues like gingivitis, tooth decay, and periodontal disease are widespread in senior cats and can cause serious pain, infection, and even heart issues if left untreated.
How we help: We regularly check their mouths for signs of discomfort and work with veterinarians to provide cleanings, extractions, and pain management when needed.
🧠 3. Cognitive Dysfunction (Feline Dementia)
Just like humans, cats can experience age-related cognitive decline. Signs include disorientation, changes in sleeping patterns, forgetfulness, or increased vocalization.
How we help: We create familiar, calming environments, keep routines predictable, and provide mental stimulation to help keep minds sharp.
🐾 4. Arthritis and Joint Pain
Older cats often suffer from arthritis, especially in their hips, knees, or spine. They may move more slowly, jump less, or groom themselves less frequently.
How we help: We provide soft bedding, ramps, heated pads, and pain relief options—everything to keep them comfy and mobile.
⚖️ 5. Weight Fluctuations
Some senior cats become underweight due to illness or poor nutrient absorption, while others may gain weight due to decreased activity.
How we help: We tailor feeding plans to each cat’s needs and monitor their weight regularly to catch any concerning changes early.
👁️ 6. Vision and Hearing Loss
Aging can affect a cat’s senses. Diminished eyesight or hearing can make them more easily startled or less responsive.
How we help: We use touch and scent to communicate, keep their surroundings consistent, and avoid sudden movements that could scare them.
💗 7. Heart Disease
Heart issues can quietly develop over time. Coughing, fatigue, or breathing difficulty are subtle signs that may indicate a deeper problem.
How we help: We watch for symptoms and provide regular vet checks, with echocardiograms or medications if needed.
🧬 8. Cancer
Cancer becomes more common in older cats. Lumps, unexplained weight loss, or behavioral changes are often the first signs.
How we help: Early detection through physical exams and veterinary screening gives us the best chance to manage or treat conditions as they arise.
